Treatment of septic tank effluent predominantly occurs in the aerobic, unsaturated zone above the water table.   There has been a long debate across jurisdictions as to how much soil is needed for proper treatment and how constituent move across the capillary fringe.  This presentation will review recent work at both filed and laboratory scales in order to address this issue.
