In moving new technologies from research fields to growers farms we must move from replicated research plots to on-farm evaluation with growers themselves. In 2010 Pioneer Hi-Bred conducted on-farm evaluations of Optimum AQUAmax hybrids across Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado. At each test location, growers were asked to plant their best current hybrid and P1151HR in a side-by-side comparison using a split-planter layout in field-length replicated strips. The growers were also asked to increase the seeding rates by 5,000 seeds per acre. The hybrids compared were similar in relative maturity and could be Pioneer brand or competitive hybrids. Pioneer representatives were available to assist growers in all phases of these trials and acquire important field notes throughout the season. Each hybrid strip was harvested with the grower combine and yields recorded with either a weigh wagon or yield monitor properly calibrated prior to harvest. Results from these trials confirm the yield advantage of Optimum AQUAmax products over the grower-selected hybrids. They also demonstrate the ability of these hybrids to benefit from increased plant population.
