The demands and stresses of a changing world will affect the dynamics of carbon and nutrients in soil. The turnover of soil carbon and nutrients, in turn, will influence the resilience of ecosystems and their response to coming changes. Many of the pertinent processes are mediated by microbial communities in the soil. In this paper, we review briefly some of the effects of global changes on soil dynamics, and then pose some questions for soil microbiologists to ponder in addressing the challenges that may arise.
