Trends and Prospects of Chinese Cereal Production.

ABSTRACT: China is the world's first country in population, as well as in cereal production and consumption. China's cereal movement always allure the attention from the world, especially in recent grain crisis. To guarantee the food security, Chinese government put positive policy in grain development practice to enhance farmers enthusiasm. The slide down trend of planting area in the beginning of the 21st century has been transferred and, the cereal planting area and cereal yield increased continually in the past 4 years. China become a more important cereal producer in the world, not only escaped from the global grain price crisis, but makes a vital contribution to global food security. In recent years, the structure of Chinese cereal is changing significantly, not only in terms of production, but also as far as consumption is concerned. Non-grain ration consumption increased quickly. An analysis shows that Chinese cereal production will maintain a sustainable increase in future. The cereal production in 2010 and 2015 will rise to 463 million tons and 487 million tons respectively. 70%-75% of the increment will be derived from maize. Before 2015, China's cereal production can meet her cereal consumption and need not to purchase big deal of cereal from the world market. Keywords: Cereal; yield; trend; prospect; China
