Abstract:
Monsanto is known for being a leader in the biotechnology and seed industry. Many people recognize the outstanding research and development work conducted by Monsanto. However, few people are aware of Monsanto’s customer outreach program. Currently there are three learning centers, Monmouth , IL , Scott , MS , and Gothenburg, NE. Agronomic extension is the major role of these centers. The goal of the Learning Centers is to provide growers, dealers, and agronomists with information regarding production practices. Additionally, the studies conducted at these facilities reinforce stewardship of biotech products to enhance their sustainability. To accomplish these objectives, numerous studies are conducted each year on a variety of agronomic topics, including plant nutrition, fertilization, plant population, planting timing, and pest management in corn, soybeans, and cotton. These studies are conducted by well trained scientists with knowledge of the local cropping systems. During the summer months, these centers are open to the public for viewing field trials in progress. Last year, over 6000 people attended tours offered at the Monmouth and Scott locations. In a single tour topics ranging from weed resistance management, biotech stewardship, up to plant nutrition and fungicide use are covered. Certified crop advisors may earn continuing education units for attending a training event. At the end of the growing season all studies are evaluated and summarized. The research summaries are distributed to tour attendees from that year.
