Soil organic carbon (SOC) in the reclaimed coal mined soils is a mixture of carbon (C) from the humified organic matter (OM) and coal residues incorporated during mining and reclamation processes. Thus, quantification of soil organic carbon sequestration rates also requires quantification of coal C in reclaimed minesoils. Currently there in no standard method for quantification of coal C content in reclaimed minesoils. Consequently, the reported rates of C sequestration in the minesoils may have been overestimated due to coal C contamination. In this presentation, thermal, chemical and themi-chemical extraction methods are compared for their effectiveness of coal determination in the reclaimed minesoils.
