Organic agriculture in Canada has expanded rapidly in recent years. The conditions inherent to operating in this northern climate present unique challenges, however, that shapes the character of organic production systems, and their productivity, efficiency and environmental footprint. Drawing upon over 30 years combined engagement by the co-authors in development of the organic sector in Canada and associated research and extension, the presentation will provide an overview of the key trends and limitations to expansion of organic agriculture in Canada. Results from recent national research programs targeting the specific organic agronomic and livestock production system challenges under these short season conditions will be presented.
