Sediment basin has been utilized to capture eroded or disturbed soil from construction field or agricultural areas over the years. The sediment basin acts as a buffer by delaying entering of sediment-laden soil into the downstream water bodies. However, currently used fixed riser pipe of principal spillway could not provide enough storage in case frequent heavy storm events. Thus in this study floating time-delay riser pipe apparatus was developed using superabsorbent polymers. With this apparatus, settlement time of middle-sized soil particles could be deposited into the sediment basin, which were not possible with existing fixed pipe riser of principal spillway at the sediment basin. In addition, this newly developed apparatus could provide more flood storage to downstream streams. As shown in this study, this floating time-delay riser pipe apparatus could be utilized at various areas instead of existing fixed riser pipe of principal spillway. Currently, field application of this apparatus has been performed under various rainfall-runoff/sediment condition.
