Based on the bionic prototype of lime extremities of animals, jute fibres were processed having the bionic structure to study the effects of dumbbell-shaped jute fibres on the performance of friction materials. Jute fibres reinforced friction materials were prepared by mold and heat treatment. The friction and wear performance of the friction materials were tested on a constant speed friction tester. The results showed that dumbbell-shaped spacing have less influence on the friction coefficient of friction materials and the friction coefficient of dumbbell-shaped jute fibres reinforced friction materials (DJF) have bigger fluctuation compared with straight fibre and they are relatively large at low temperature and slightly smaller at high temperature compared with straight fibre. The wear rate of DJF with dumbbell-shaped spacing of 15 mm was the lowest. It is only higher than that of friction materials with dumbbell-shaped spacing of 10 mm at the temperature of 200 ¡æ and than that of straight fibre reinforced friction materials at the temperature of 250 ¡æ. Morphologies of wear surfaces of DJF were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the friction materials with bionic dumbbell-shaped jute fibres can reduce the specific wear rate and provide stable friction coefficient.
