The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center, History and Development.

Jim W. Freeburn, Univ of Wyoming, 2753 State Hwy 157, Lingle, WY 82223

This presentation will focus defining the need for a research center  with emphasis on sustainable agriculture and on the delelopment of SAREC. The idea for SAREC was conceived by a diverse group of faculty and constituents in 1999. The chronology of events leading to the sale of two other research centers and the subsequent establishment of SAREC will be detailed.  Key factors such as identification of needed resources, purchase of four separate properties, and the development of facilities will be presented. A detailed description of resources available at the new center will be presented. The quick presentation will inform attendees of the long-term outcomes expected from the new center as well as outline the difference that set it apart from "business as usual" at land grant agricultural research centers.  With an emphasis on integrated, holistic or systems research that requires significant collaboration, SAREC is a new research center that strives to serve the broad-based needs of diverse Wyoming agricultural producers.
