The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) was established near Lingle, Wyoming in 2003. The Center consists of dryland, irrigated land, rangeland, and a feedlot, all at a single location. Research at SAREC will focus on an integrated approach to managing farms and ranches while protecting the environment. There are also experiments in weed control, plant diseases, alternative crops, and precision agriculture at the center. As the property is being converted from farming and ranching to research, an intensive effort is underway to collect baseline data and create detailed maps of the facilities, soils, and variability in crop and pasture production. Technologies being used in this effort include geographic information systems, global positioning system, yield and soil electrical conductivity mapping, and digital aerial imagery. These are being used as both research and management tools and will be the basis for a virtual tour of this new research and extension center.
