The landscape of scientific research for all disciplines is rapidly evolving in response to the increasing complexity of global challenges. Soil science research is no exception to this. In order to achieve successful transformation of soil science research and sustain its relevance to the shifting global priorities, it is essential to emphasize question-driven scientific research instead of discipline-driven research. Such changes would require multi-pronged strategies for efficient use of existing financial, technological and human resources. An important approach for implementing such strategies will be to encourage next generation of soil scientists to collaborate beyond disciplinary boundaries. This can be initiated through engagement of students and emerging soil scientists in discussions that will foster inter-disciplinary research ideas, with insights from other disciplines (such as agronomy, ecology, and hydrology). The main objective of this session is to provide a platform for such discussion by inviting guest speakers from other disciplines to share perspectives on potential opportunities and identify challenges for setting a 21st century soil research agenda. The dissemination of the outcomes of the SSSA-supported student-led initiative will aid in demonstrating the merit of collaboration and partnership for tackling complex societal challenges and modern research needs. It will emphasize the importance of student involvement and engagement in shaping the future of soil sciences research, by highlighting the current and evolving research opportunities in our digital age.
