Abstract:
Four varieties each of lettuce and tomatoes were planted in a field, as well as in a season-extending high tunnel, in Northwest Wisconsin. Some of the lettuce and all of the tomato were started in a greenhouse for transplanting in May. Lettuce also was planted directly in both the high tunnel and open field. Over the course of the growing and harvesting season, measurements were taken of both yield and market date for each production system. A survey was sent to vegetable growers throughout the region and surrounding states to better understand what information they desired in relation to high tunnels and season extension in order to guide future experimentation.
