Soils play an important role in site productivity and the sustainable management of forest ecosystems, and soils information is used to make silvicultural prescriptions and other management decisions. The need for soils information is increasing, concomitant to the increasing expectation that forests are to remain biologically diverse and resilient while providing a variety of products and services such as clean water, climate mitigation, stored carbon, timber, and possibly biofuels. Soil productivity programs in US forest industry have evolved and diminished, changing the needs and expectations of industry for forest soils education.
