Soil contains trace elements from many different natural and anthropogenic sources. Trace elements in soils are toxic in high concentrations, and some, like lead, are toxic to humans while having no beneficial effects.  This study examined the distribution and stocks of trace elements most extensive soil series of the North Maine Woods. Soils were described and sampled by NRCS staff, and samples were analyzed by the NRCS lab in Lincoln, NB using standard methods. Results were analyzed to examine correlations significant differences between series and horizons.  Within-pedon distributions of total elemental analysis concentrations of Pb, Hg, Cd, Ni, and As follow pedogenic processes typical of Spodosols. Concentrations and areal stocks of these elements correlate with soil organic carbon among horizons, and vary significantly among soil series. Further analyses will include comparison by landscape position, drainage class, and region.
