Proper nitrogen (N) management in sugarbeet production is necessary to ensure high yields and quality. Research over time has sought to understand optimum N rates under a variety of locations and conditions.  A review of past and current research shows that the N requirement of sugarbeet in the U.S. has been highly variable. This variability is likely a result of many factors which cannot be definitively determined from the published literature.  However, yield and N application rate data have shown that sugarbeet production has increased over time while N application rates have remained stable, indicating an increase in N use efficiency.  Research has played an important role in fine tuning N requirements of sugarbeet .
