Abstract:  Construction sites especially on the hilly landscapes are a major source of sedimentations to the shorelines and other water bodies since these sites drastically disturbed and potentially produce the highest erosion per unit area as compared to agricultural land and/or flat lands.  Therefore the main management goal for controlling the runoff and sedimentation on the sites under study were;  to minimize the on-site damage and loss of topsoil; to trap the eroded sediment on-site and avoid off-site impacts on downstream water quality and/or shorelines and; to reduce sediment deposition on neighboring land, roads and ditches.  To achieve the aforementioned goals Vetiver Grass System (VGS) was used as a bioengineering technique for managing runoff and controlling soil erosion and preventing sedimentation at the construction site near the shore line.  Also Vetiver grass will be used for the rehabilitation and stabilization of hilly watersheds on the construction sites in southern Guam.
