Data sharing and collaboration are very important for modern scientific and industrial organizations. Current web technologies and tools have provided a plethora of techniques for generating and disseminating data from multiple sources. Yet there are many barriers to data sharing and collaboration. This talk will focus on ways to overcome these barriers and describe mechanisms to enable data sharing across individuals and groups. Most important among these mechanisms are: provenance tracking, use of wikis, social bookmarking and tagging, as well as social network analysis to provide insights into effective sharing and collaboration. The talk will also share lessons learned from the ongoing implementation of the iPlant collaborative (www.iplantcollaborative.org) and other scientific environments.
