Currently, OneSAF is the primary training and simulation software package for the U.S. Army. The OneSAF system is the U.S. Army’s next generation simulation system that can represent a full range of military operations, systems, and control processes. It is an entity-level simulation, meaning that it can simulate the activities of individual or groups of individual combatants or weapon platforms. Addtionally, OneSAF also provides the appropriate representations of the physical environment (e.g., terrain features, weather, and illumination) and its effect on simulated activities and behaviors. The OneSAF software system is open architecture and open source thus military land management unique capabilities can be programmed into the software package. The ability of this software program to provide improved training realism within a simulation environment that is closely related to the actual conditions in the field offers an opportunity to predict land use patterns before disturbance events actually occur or to track events as they occur. Such a tool would be invaluable to installation land managers providing a proactive means to mitigate land use impacts. As a precursor to an effort to extend OneSAF software capabilities for the physical environment this presentation explores the basic functionality of the package and examines the potential of integrating existing training data within the software to predict land management impacts via OneSAF Version 4.
