Rapid Trait Development System: Non-Transgenic Approach to Providing Plant Improvements in Canola.

Cibus Global’s Rapid Trait Development System (RTDS™) technology is an environmentally-friendly, smart-breeding technology that enables seed producers to develop plants with commercially valuable characteristics. Unlike genetic engineering, which inserts exotic genetic material from one species into another, RTDS introduces genetic traits through a natural process of gene repair. RTDS delivers the advantages that farmers seek in GMO (transgenic) crops, such as crop product protection tolerance or increased yield, and benefits from the clear path to market and consumer confidence of traditionally bred plants.
RTDS has already been applied to both winter oil seed rape and spring oil seed rape, with ideal results, and RTDS-developed canola will come to market in the United States as early as 2012.  RTDS is also currently being applied to develop food crops such as flax and potatoes.  Other potential applications include agricultural uses like enhanced biofuels and areas of opportunity where precise, fine structure changes in genes can be applied to create or improve a new product.
