Soil and sediment samples from diverse sources were determined with the modified method of weight-loss-on-ignition for organic carbon to verify the consistence and adaptability of the method compared with the conventional auto-analysis. The significant correlation for most samples has demonstrated its suitability and the outliers showed exceptions, which implies that a precaution is needed for an accurate and precise quantification. A regression model has been established in order to convert the determination by either of these two most adopted methods. Obviously the weight-loss-on-ignition method, if applied appropriately, can provide reliable determination in carbon analysis with advantages of simplicity, easy to handle, cost effective, and without waste disposal.
