Abstract:
The role of turfgrass in urban and suburban environments grows more critical as these populations increase. As the population shifts from rural to urban the connection to the natural environment is fractured. Yet concern for environmental quality, especially on a global scale is increasing with the media reporting on climate change. Turfgrass offers a unique opportunity to re-connect the population with their natural environment. Paramount to establishing a viable education program in this area is estimating the role of turfgrass in sequestering carbon as well as the emission of carbon during management. These estimates can be integrated into progressive Web 2.0 efforts designed to inform, educate and motivate individuals to act in a more sustainable fashion.
