  • Abstract:
    Soybean meal comprises a large part of monogastric livestock animal feeds. The phytate content of this feed poses a problem for the producers of these animals in that it prohibits digestion and absorption of phosphorus, and therefore increases phosphorus content of the manure, making it less suitable for land application. We are working with a novel mutation responsible for lowering phytate in soybeans. We present data describing the association of a molecular marker linked to the mutant gene with inorganic phosphorous (Pi) using colorimetric assay. To achieve this, the association of the marker allele with the trait was confirmed in approximately 17 diverse pedigrees.
