Abstract:
ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of potassium levels and time of applications on growth and yield of sugarcane at Farm Area, Sugarcane Research Institute, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad (31°.25 N, 73°.09 E), Pakistan during 2006 & 2007. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications having a net plot size of 6 m x 8 m. Four potassium levels (0, 112, 168 and 224) and three times of applications (at sowing, at 90 DAS, and half at sowing + half at 90 DAS). The results revealed significant differences among all the treatments means except germination (%) and number of shoots m-2. Maximum mean value of leaf area index (7.8) was recorded at T7 treatment (84 kg K2O at sowing + 84 kg K2O ha-1 at 90 DAS).Application of 168 kg K2O ha-1 in two splits; 84 kg K2O at sowing + 84 kg K2O ha-1 at 90 DAS produced maximum stripped cane yield of 116 & 107 t ha-1 during 2006 and 2007, respectively. Maximum cane length and number of millable canes were also recorded at the same treatment. A positive and strong relationship was observed between stripped cane yield and leaf area index, number of shoots, cane length, cane girth and number of millable canes.
