Abstract:
Purdue’s Agronomy Club feels that outreach in the form of service is one way of reaching out to our community.  This past year we used three events to accomplish this: our White Elephant Auction, Adopt-a-Soldier, and NICHES Land Trust Tree Planting.  Through these programs, we not only find a way to give back to the community, but also to promote the name of Agronomy to those we touch.  Our White Elephant Auction occurs every fall and involves our club members, faculty, and anyone else who cares to join us.  Our members donate items, whether of monetary value or humeral, that are auctioned to anyone willing to spend a few bucks for a worthy cause.  This year, our proceeds went to John Romine.  He was a Purdue Agriculture student suffering with cancer.  We used the proceeds to benefit him and his family through their time of struggle.  We also took part in Adopt-a-Soldier prior to the Christmas Holiday.  We adopted fifteen soldiers in Iraq who worked with the local Iraqi children.  We donated food, school supplies, clothing, and toys for the children as well as personal articles for the soldiers.  These items were then used by the soldiers to help strengthen their bonds and camaraderie with the young people of the country.  Finally, our club feels that it is important to give back to the environment as well.  We took part in a tree planting ceremony at Bachner Nature Reserve.  We worked with the NICHES Land Trust in a dedication ceremony to promote the reforestation of the agricultural sector.  Through our philanthropic efforts, we hoped to not only better our community and our world, but to promote the name of Agronomy to those we served.
