Abstract:
Bertrand D. Tanner (1943 – 2008) made significant contributions to the advancement of environmental science over the past 30 years.  An overview will be given of his work with respect to the introduction and use of automatic weather stations in agricultural meteorology,  the development and use of sonic anemometry combined with open path water vapor and CO2 sensors in flux systems to measure turbulent transport of gases in the atmosphere, gradient flux systems, and tunable diode laser trace gas analyzers incorporated into environmental measurement systems for studying biological processes relating to greenhouse gas  (GHG) sources and sinks.  Bert’s work as an educator, applying eddy-covariance techniques to GHG flux measurements, in several flux networks in different countries will also be summarized.  Bert’s passion for science and standard of excellence will be memorialized.
