Abstract:
The Beef Herd Health Management Calendar is an interactive utility created to provide the beef producer a schedule of management tasks that matches the first month and length of their calving season. Producers often wonder what times of year they should carry out management tasks such as castrating, vaccinating, dehorning, deworming and others ... including forage and soil sample collection and evaluating sample test results. The supporting html-driven instrument facilitates self-guided study and serves as a teaching tool to assist with delivery of programs on scheduling annual health management plans.
The calendar of management tasks is supported by an html-driven application that incorporates 39 video demonstrations on how to conduct herd health management activities, as well as a complete library of 72 technical publications to provide in-depth information relating to tasks within each period of cow-calf production. The application is exceptionally user-friendly and accessible to even the novice computer user, designed to ensure that beef producers with minimal computer literacy are able to access and learn from the information provided by the Beef Herd Health Management Calendar.
The instrument also serves as an effective teaching tool for group meetings, to deliver the multitude of concepts surrounding herd health management scheduling.  Much of the technical information needed to design and implement programs on scheduling annual health management plans for cow-calf herds is embedded within the instrument.
The ultimate goal is to increase the production efficiency of the whole herd, all the cows, calves, heifers and bulls.  The calendar of specific dates of tasks will ensure “doing the right thing at the right time” for increased effectiveness of the practices.
