Abstract:
ABSTRACT
Sustainable vineyard practices have gained popularity over the last few years to counter soil degradation, reduced produce quality and environmental pollution (Stamatiadis et al., 1996). Soil health or soil quality plays a major role in sustainable farm management.  Previous studies of effects on soil health have focused on organic practices and conventional practices.  Many of these studies have been conducted on farms and vineyards in the Midwest and overseas.    The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects sustainable management practices have on soil health in several Central Coast vineyards.  Soil samples were collected and analyzed for physical and chemical properties before and after sustainable management practices were implemented.  Soil quality improved in areas where cover crops and compost were added.  Soil quality decreased in areas where disking took place.  These results suggest that implementing sustainable management practices improve soil health.
