Abstract:
Nutrient management plans (NMPs) are components of environmental operating permits required for many broiler operations in Mississippi for 15 years. Regulation changes, technology upgrades, and workload issues have led to mechanical changes in NMP preparation over time. Recent software adoptions have required Extension Service and Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) cooperation to more efficiently present soil fertility/nutrient management recommendations to clientele. A session with endusers debugged the program. Further refinement has incorporated RUSLE and site specific Phosphorus Index calculations that allow more exact determination of manure application rates. Experience from the 2008 rollout with agency and private industry plan writers, farmers, and regulators will be shared.
