Abstract:
Research on the distribution and transport of Hg in North Dakota is being conducted at NDSU as a direct result of NSF EAR/IF funding for a direct mercury analyzer (Proposal #0744031).  The research objectives for this proposal were to:  1) conduct a survey of Hg concentrations in surface soils across ND; 2) determine if non anthropogenic sources are contributing to declines in surface water quality; and 3) determine the fate and transport of Hg in native and culturally influenced soils of ND.  The results from these three objectives are needed to quantify the spatial distribution and concentration of Hg in the soils of ND, the sources of Hg that contribute to water quality and fish quality declines, and to determine soil physical and chemical properties that maximize the mobility and risks associated with Hg in the environment.  This instrument will also be utilized as a teaching tool for middle and high school students (International Water Institute) and for undergraduate and graduate students.
