Comparison of Annual and Perennial Ryegrass In Overseeded Bermudagrass Turf.

Lloyd Nelson and Jimmy Crowder. Texas A & M University, PO Box E, Overton, TX 75684-0290, United States of America

‘Ace' bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) was overseeded with several cool season turf grass cultivars on 24 October, 2005.  Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cultivars were Axcella, Axcella 2, and Panterra and were seeded at18.5 lbs/1000 sq ft.  Perennial ryegrass (L. perenne Lam.) cultivars were Pleasure Plus, Sunshine 2, Palmer IV, and Ph D, and were seeded at 15 lbs/1000 sq ft.  Turf quality ratings were recorded from December through May.  Turf quality ratings of annuals were equal to perennials until mid-April when perennials were superior.  Turf quality of perennials began to decline by late May.  Turf color ratings of annuals Panterra and Axcella 2 were competitive with lower rated perennials, but not as dark green as Ph D, Pleasure Plus or Sunshine 2, the darker green entries.  Transition date of the annuals began in early May, and by 19 May, 80 % of annuals were dead, while more that 90 % of perennials were alive and competitive with the bermudagrass.  Perennials were still alive on 8 June.  Generally speaking, annuals transitioned out the sod in mid-May while perennials transitioned out at a slower rate during mid- to late June.
