139 Urban Soils: Properties, Problems and Needs: II

Poster Session

The rapid pace of population growth, the transition from rural to urban environments, and the desire to create living green spaces provides a variety of challenges for soil and plant scientists. The opening theme of the symposium will be an overview of the prevalent chemical, physical and biological characteristics of urban soils with an emphasis on their common problems and salient needs for restoration. The major theme of the symposium will address common restoration strategies for urban soils, including physical, chemical, and biological interventions to improve key soil functions. The major theme will include the need to apply the principles of soil restoration, which include the ecosystem services normally provided by soil, to the development of soil blends and amendments (manufactured soils) for unique urban uses.
