Southern California Aquaponics and Aquaculture Tour
ToursJoin us on a tour of three aquaponics/aquaculture operations to learn about the latest developments, achievements, and environmental challenges in these areas. This tour organized by the Animal Agriculture and the Environment Community will take participants to the Hubbs Sea World Research Institute to see the white seabass stock enhancement program. Tour participants will see all aspects of this working marine fish hatchery including broodstock holding, early larval rearing, and juvenile production systems, as well as tagging operations. Next stop is the Carlsbad Aquafarm, the oldest shellfish aquafarm growing over 1.5 million pounds of shellfish, annually. Originally founded as an aquaculture research facility in 1968 for San Diego State University in the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, California, key foci of the facility since 1990 include cultivation of the eco-friendly Mediterranean mussel, Pacific oyster, San Diego’s green abalone, and a native red seaweed. After a lunch stop at Rockin’ Baja Lobster at Oceanside Harbor Village, the final tour stop will be EVO farms, which features a variety of operations utilizing commercial recirculating aquaculture systems including both aquaponics and organic hydroponics and produce leafy greens and herbs along with both edible and ornamental fish varieties. Participants need to wear shoes that can get wet or disinfected (not sandals).
