149 Symposium--Development of Soil-Test Based Recommendations: Historical Perspectives, Current Issues and Future Directions

Oral Session
S08 Nutrient Management & Soil & Plant Analysis In the 1950’s and 1960’s the U.S. Land Grant Universities (LGU) spent significant efforts on correlating and calibrating soil test procedures and developing soil-test based fertilizer recommendations for agronomic crops. Since that time, research in this area and related funding has declined despite the fundamental importance of soil test recommendations for nutrient management and, increasingly, environmental protection. Adding to this concern is the decline in number of public soil testing laboratories, once present at almost all LGUs, as well as the associated extension/research faculty qualified to perform research in this area. The goal of this symposium is to address these concerns as well as assess the need for updating soil test recommendations for agronomic production; address the challenge of developing recommendations to meet the needs of policy makers; and discuss how we can better utilize technology, combined regional research efforts, and data management to enhance development of soil test recommendations in the future.
