The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) Summer Internship Programs target talented high school students who demonstrate a high aptitude in math and science related subjects. Through a series of screenings from students’ schools and UGA, outstanding applicants are selected and allowed to do paid internship with CAES researchers for six weeks. The students are introduced to the work of agricultural scientists and the goal is to encourage outstanding high school students to pursue careers in science. With the mentor's help, each student develops a science project to work on. At the end of the program, students present reports on their projects and essays detailing their summer internship experience. The program also includes an out-of-country experience through travel to Costa Rica or Ghanna to expose students to international agriculture and culture. The program has improved enrolment of underrepresented minorities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) in CAES.
