A new modeling tool, based on the EPIC model, has been developed to predict soil moisture (volumetric water content and/or matric potential) and thereby to identify Soil Moisture and Soil Temperature Regimes (Soil Taxonomy) for various soil depths, and for different, broad land cover conditions (forestland, cropland, bare ground, etc.). The model has been evaluated using multi-year data sets derived from established soil climate stations (e.g. SCAN sites).
