Experience from three maize research projects utilizing the haploid inducer RWS x RWK-76 from the University of Hohenheim will be summarized. These projects result from collaborations between Iowa State Doubled Haploid Facility (http://www.plantbreeding.iastate.edu/DHF/DHF.htm) researchers and USDA-ARS Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (GEM) Project (http://www.public.iastate.edu/~usda-gem/) researchers. They include 1) induction and subsequent doubling of BC1 lines from populations of adapted exotic maize populations backcrossed to elite temperate lines, 2) efficacy of doubling methods for haploids from elite temperate backgrounds using various microtubule inhibitors and colchicine, 3) induction and doubling success in elite maize populations.
