Bertrand D. Tanner: A Perspective From Australia.

Bert Tanner was one of those special people you meet in life who gave his all as son, husband, father, friend, colleague, mentor, and adventurer. He built a worldwide reputation as a practitioner and scientist based on a passion for improving measurements in environmental meteorology. Work, for Bert, was an adventure which afforded him many opportunities around the world, including Australia, where he built on his father’s (Champ Tanner) academic contacts and developed a strong affinity with Australia and Australians. He loved our beer, meat pies, old fashioned pubs, landscape, laid-back lifestyle, barbeques, sense of humour, and our irreverence. Bert visited Australia often and built a broad network of friends, colleagues and collaborators across the country. In this paper I highlight Bert Tanner’s contributions to Australian environmental measurements through his network with some of Australia’s leading environmental scientists and practitioners, and reflect on some of his experiences and stories relayed by his Australian ‘mates’.
