Abstract:
The Georgia Department of Health - Environmental Health Division (DHR) uses soils maps to permit onsite waste disposal in Georgia. After receiving initial soils training most DHR employees are not provided further intensive training in soils as applied to onsite waste disposal. The Soil Science Society of Georgia in cooperation with The University of Georgia has established a series of six Advanced Soil Workshops to be held throughout Georgia every year. Local health department decide the topics and Soil Science Society of Georgia Soil Scientists and University of Georgia Faculty teach the workshops. The first workshop was "Mafic Soils" held in the Eastern Piedmont of Georgia in May, 2009. The second workshop in June, 2009, focused on "Soils And The Landscapes". Both workshops were full. The next planned workshops are "Failed Systems and Remediation in Northwest Georgia", "Plinthic Soils of Southwest Georgia", "Toeslope Soils of the Blue Ridge Mountains", and "Siting and Designing Mound Systems in Southeast Georgia". Non-DHR persons are allowed to attend if there are openings.
