Abstract:
Humic products have been raved about, maligned, judged, misjudged and mostly misunderstood. However, crop growers buy and use them because they believe it adds to their profit. Crop yield data comparing humic product addition with an unamended control were produced over a 6-year period in several parts of the USA and other countries. Most of the data were produced by third party private researchers paid for by LignoTech USA to conduct the trial. Some of the studies were conducted by the USDA. A few studies were paid for by other companies to determine whether they wanted to represent the product to benefit their growers. A summary of the data shows crops grown with humic acid have an overwhelming numerically positive increase in crop yield compared to the unamended control. Percent increases ranged from about 3 to 15% with an average of about 9%. Demonstrating statistical significance is challenging, most likely due to field variation and limited dollars spent per study which limited the number of samples and replicates. Reasons for increases in crop yield may be attributed to the uptake and availability of plant nutrients in crops grown with the humic product.
