Abstract:
Annualy, about 3-4 million tons of rice straw are produced in Egypt. This ammount of residuies are usually burned by the farmers themselves in order to prepare the fields to the next winter crops causing air polution and damege the soil conestituation.Only about one fourth of this straw are on farm utilized as animal feed or for composting. Many othr ways for the economical utilization are descriped and dicussed. Manufactring rice straw for making writting paper is one of the traditional ways inthis respect, however it is limited to 150,000 tons a year.Besides, producing bio-gass is also in use but on household level only. New directions are now in use but in small scale. Straw gassification and carbonization to prouce charcoal are very important recommended ways. Producing chemicals from rice straw such as ethanol, furfural, silics gel and herbecids by hydrolysis are also reported.
