Abstract:
The next generation of farmers and ranchers became introduced to the ever-changing world of agriculture during Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture “Kiddy Barnyard” in April. Children from across the state and the local community came together to learn about production agriculture and the advancements being made in the industry. Youth, ranging from first to third graders, were exposed to multiple facets of K-State’s agricultural programs. The Wheat State Agronomy Club was fortunate to be a part of this event, as we educated the youth on the production of wheat. They were able to plant their own wheat seeds in cups and take them home to watch them grow. They were also informed on the many products they may use everyday that contain wheat. Examples included the cereal and bread they had for breakfast and flour used to bake cookies. Additional information presented included pictures of mature wheat fields and equipment used to harvest wheat. Wheat State Agronomy Club members found it a privilege to familiarize the youth on the importance of wheat production in Kansas. The visiting youth enjoyed the activity as they got to play in the dirt and experiment with planting their own wheat knowing they could watch it grow. They grew in their knowledge of wheat production and learning about agronomy in this exciting time in production agriculture.
