Collaboration between Academia and Industry--Lessons from Non-Agricultural Technical Assistance.

Victor Lechtenberg, Purdue Univ, Hovde Hall Room 130, 610 Purdue Mall, West Lafayette, IN 47907

Land grant universities are increasingly expected to be drivers of economic growth and industrial development.  This requires effective and creative relationships between academia and industry.  Such relationships should be strategic to both the academic and corporate partners. Strategic partnerships should be defined by carefully crafted, written agreements which address: limitations on scientific publication to protect intellectual property and trade secrets, protection of confidential information, potential license arrangements, role of students, sponsored research opportunities (including funding), and technical assistance.  Strategic partnerships of this nature can benefit both partners, spur the formation of new companies, speed the adoption of licensable technology, and create excellent job opportunities for university graduates.
