Critical Needs for Industry/Academic Cooperation over the Next Five Years.

Many government agencies may participate and/or fund industry/academic cooperative research, training and instructional activities. In the agricultural field, the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has 104 stations in United States and 6 foreign laboratories, thus represents a valuable resource for such cooperation. By congressional mandate, ARS is largely involved in problem-solving research projects that often fill the gap between the basic research conducted by academic professors and development work conducted by industry scientists. Both industry and academia can influence government agency funding priorities that favor cooperation between industry, academia and government agencies. The National Academy of Sciences has a committee called, Government University Industry Research Roundtable, which promotes such cooperative activities.
