Seed Longevity as Influenced by Quality, Environment and Seed Treatment.

Joseph Burris, Burris Consulting LLC, 1707 Burnett Ave., Ames, IA 50010

Seed longevity is influenced by genotype, initial seed quality and the storage conditions.  Seed produced under tropical conditions may have special challenges to quality and often exhibit a more rapid rate of deterioration than seed produced under more temperate conditions.  The last decade has seen a rapid expansion of agriculture into tropical conditions, especially into South America.  This has brought significant management challenges as related to maintaining seed quality.  Changes in seed quality with storage under tropical and temperate storage conditions will be reported as will the influence of the application of various seed treatments.  The data will primarily focus on maize seed but other species will be included as examples.
