The Alternative Crops Research Program at Western Illinois University investigates new crops for temperate North America, emphasizing farmer profitability and environmental sustainability.  Domestication of wild species for agricultural use has been a major course of work since the program’s establishment in 2000.  Lead efforts include development of a specialty fiber production system based on common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) and improvement of the industrial oilseed cuphea (Cuphea spp.) through germplasm improvement for oil quality and agronomic traits.   Evaluation of nyjer (Guizotia abyssinica) lines for suitability in North Central USA birdseed production and investigation of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) as an alternative feed grain are also ongoing.  The program has a track record of successful partnerships with public and private sector entities in new crop production, utilization, and marketing research and welcomes inquiries from potential collaborators.
