Improving the Science of Soil Change: Conference to Evaluate Research at the World's Long-Term Soil Experiments (Ltses).

Daniel Richter, Duke Univ, NSEES, LSRC, Box 90328, Durham, NC 27708-0328, Michael Hofmockel, Duke Univ, 1146 Ravenwood St, Ann Arbor, MI 48103, and David Powlson, ENGLAND, Government of, Agriculture & Environment Div., Rothamsted Research, Harpenden Herts., AL52JQ, UNITED KINGDOM.

A multifaceted project is building an international community of scientists who studies soil change over time scales of decades at long-term soil experiments.  Such experiments are found on all continents and are critical to future soil management and sustainability.  Contributing to the overall goal of networking LTSEs will be a 2007 international conference to be held at Duke University, to discuss research results and interpretations from LTSEs.  Scientists will be sought who can speak about a diversity of soil types that support a variety of land management systems.  We will select speakers who can discuss results based on contemporary techniques in molecular biology, isotope biogeochemistry, and organic and mineral-surface chemistry.
