Jon Van Gerpen, Univ of Idaho, 419 Engineering Physics Building, P.O. Box 440904, Moscow, ID 83843

Brassica crops such as rapeseed, canola, and mustard have characteristics that provide performance advantages over soybean oil when used for biodiesel production.  However, the properties of some brassica oils may cause difficulty in meeting ASTM specifications for the biodiesel. This presentation will describe these advantages and concerns and explain the role these crops could play in the development of the biodiesel industry in North America.
