Canola has great potential for industrial applications.
Europe has seen rapid growth in the use of rapeseed oil for biodiesel production. Canola has the same potential in North America. Its high oil content and ability to grow under a wide variety of growth conditions make it an idea primary or rotational crop. Expanding its acreage will require the development of suitable winter varieties to expand its range and also improvements in yield and oil content. These developments will make it a very competitive crop with wheat and soybean acreage. It also may allow its production in double cropping with soybeans or grain sorghum.
