Drought limits yield in cropping systems worldwide.  Drought tolerant crops could greatly increase yield, but breeding for them is difficult without genetic markers.  Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) techniques were used to identify polymorphic primer combinations between Dharwar Dry and Sitta, two lines of spring wheat which are parents of a recombinant inbred line population.  Of 256 primer combinations, 152 were found to be polymorphic.  These were used for a preliminary screening of the population.  Linkage analysis and single marker analysis were conducted on the preliminary data using existing field data.  These showed promising results.  The population screening will be completed in future studies and markers linked to drought traits will be identified.  From these, PCR markers will be developed to assist breeders in marker assisted selection for drought tolerance
